Man sought for Dongan Hills hit and run incident… with wild turkeys

There was probably a better solution to the problem.

By TIM RONALDSON

The Herald Sun is reporting that a New York driver is sought in connection with a hit and run accident. The driver didn’t hit another motorist or pedestrian, though; he plowed into a group of wild turkeys along Mason Avenue.

We’ve got to give credit to The Herald Sun for this creative, punny lede to their story:

“A motorist played chicken with a gaggle of turkeys on Staten Island, plowing through the wild birds in what may have been a deliberate act of fowl play…”

Odd story, to say the least. Apparently, wild turkeys have been a problem in this Dongan Hills neighborhood for quite some time, but this is an interesting way to solve the problem. It wasn’t the first time a person took matters into his (or her) own hands. A Staten Island man was busted for allegedly firing bottle rockets at a group of the turkeys to drive them off his property a few years ago.

Can the turkeys be driven out of the area, a la the Canada geese? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, police are searching for the driver. A witness grabbed the license plate number of the driver, so it shouldn’t be long before he or she is caught.
