Disgraced cop’s Staten Island ex-wife wants custody of their daughter

Kenneth Moreno

The Staten Island ex-wife of former police officer Kenneth Moreno doesn’t want to pay him 14-times as much alimony just because he lost his job over a rape charge.

Sounds reasonable when you put it that way.

Maria Cruz, 35, was ordered by the court Wednesday to pay more than $700 a month in child support to Moreno to support their daughter, according to amNew York. This is a huge increase over her previous payments of $50 a month.

The judge ordered the increase because Cruz has a solid job with the MTA, whereas Moreno was fired over accusations that he raped a young, drunk woman in her East Village apartment. Though cleared of the rape charge, Moreno does face a year in jail for official misconduct.

Cruz, in turn, plans to ask for custody of their daughter today, according to the New York Post. And she’s gone on a very public war against her ex-husband.

One quote getting a lot of play in the New York Daily News and elsewhere:

“His jail time is so overdue. If he’s not in jail, he will continue to ruin the lives of young women.”

Moreno’s downfall began in 2008, when he and his partner had to help an extremely drunk woman out of a cab. The woman later said Moreno had sex with her in her apartment while she was naked and half conscious.

He was cleared of the rape charge but convicted of misconduct for returning repeatedly to her apartment throughout that night.
