Armed robberies strike the waterfront

Bay Street Landing, where the muggings have occurred.

Three armed men have been robbing people along an isolated waterfront walkway in St. George, the Staten Island Advance reported.

So far, one victim has landed in the hospital after a beating along the Bay Street Landing. That resulted from one of three muggings early Wednesday night near the old U.S. Coast Guard base, a representative from a neighborhood association told the Advance. Another mugging reportedly took place Thursday.

The gang consists of a white man and a black man who commit the robbery using a knife and possibly a gun. A third man looks for likely victims. The trio particularly likes to target people who are walking alone.

The robberies have been a particular problem for people living in the Bay Street Landing area, who use the esplanade to get to and from the ferry building.

Police say they are zeroing on the muggers.
