A 1-and-a-half-year-old girl was shot in the face by a stray bullet Tuesday afternoon in Mariner’s Harbor, after a man fired at members of her family, possibly because of a dispute with the little girl’s mother.
Samyah Bailey was sitting in a stroller near the playground by her home at the Arlington Terrace Apartments when the assailant fired at the little girl’s father and uncle. The bullet entered through Samyah’s temple and exited between her eyes, her grandmother told the New York Daily News.
The News also reports that Samyah has lost an eye.
Police have arrested Damark King, 19. The Post said the shooter had dated Samiyah’s mother, and the little girl’s uncle and father may have intervened in a fight between them.
Samyah is in critical but stable condition at Richmond University Medical Center.
The Daily News quotes one person at the scene saying the victim was “crying. She was gasping for air. She couldn’t breathe.”
As a side note, police had to evacuate and cordon off Christopher Street near Mersereau Avenue, after a raid on the suspect’s house turned up a stash of weapons and led authorities to search for explosives.
