The big, brave man who is accused of accidentally shooting a Staten Island toddler in the head was led into court Thursday. He did not get a warm reception.
A group also cheered when the judge ordered the suspect held without bail.
Damark King, 19, is charged with firing a gun wildly near a playground at the Arlington Terrace Apartments in Mariner’s Harbor. One stray bullet hit 1 1/2-year-old Samyah Bailey as she sat in her stroller eating candy and playing with her sister’s hair.
The little girl reportedly is recovering well, but has lost an eye – which may be why someone at the courtroom also demanded “an eye for an eye.”
Sources told the Daily News that King was firing at Samyah’s uncle, Anthony Mahoney, who had gotten into a fight with King’s friend, Daryl McCullough. Mahoney and McCullough had conflicts about a woman, according to witnesses. When Samyah’s dad, Michael Bailey, joined in the fight, that’s when King whipped out a 9 mm. handgun and squeezed off four rounds, witnesses said.
Though the alleged imbecile missed the men, one of his bullets caught Samyah in the side of the head and exited out between her eyes.
King, who was already on parole for a robbery in 2007, now faces charges of assault, weapons possession, criminal use of a firearm and reckless endangerment.
On a possibly unrelated note, the Post reports that King and Samyah’s mother once may have been boyfriend and girlfriend, leading observers to wonder why any woman would break up with such a wonderful, wonderful person.
