Saturday’s record-breaking October snowstorm caught us by surprise

For all the panic we had over the earthquake and hurricanes last summer, the one thing we didn’t see coming was a wet snowstorm in the wrong part of the year.

Saturday’s soggy blizzard hit the city with 2.9 inches of snow in Central Park, smashing the old October record of 0.8 inches set back in 1925. In Staten Island, 1.9 inches piled up in Annadale, according to the Staten Island Advance.

Despite the relatively mild accumulation on the Island, however, more than half of the 700 citywide reports of downed trees and limbs came from this borough, according to the New York Post.

Winter does not officially start for almost two months.
