Fire starts in kitchen, displaces two families in Port Richmond

Two families in Port Richmond lost their homes Monday afternoon, after a kitchen fire grew to consume both units of the building, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Five firefighters also landed in the hospital with minor injuries.

The blaze started just after 3 p.m., in a second-floor rear kitchen of 41 Sharpe Ave., then spread to the attic unit. It did its damage quickly, ripping through two households before getting under control by 3:39 p.m.

One of the displaced families was described as notably active in the community, working with Project Hospitality and the Eye Openers Youth Against Violence Organization.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
