A Staten Island man who sold heroin to a New Jersey man who overdosed on it and later died was sentenced Friday to five years in prison, according to the Asbury Park Press.
Glenn Carrano, 27, received the maximum sentence under his plea bargain from Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels, for selling heroin to Daren Karol, 24, of the Manahawkin section of Stafford.
Carrano, who was also living in Stafford at the time, sold the drug to Karol on May 25, 2007. Karol then overdosed. He lay unconscious in Carrano’s home for 12 to 14 hours before Carrano called someone and asked what to do with a person who had overdosed.
Karol was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford and later to Cooper Medical Center in Camden County, where he lingered in a coma until dying on June 9, 2007.
Carrano continued to sell heroin even after Karol died, Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Michael Weatherstone told the Press. In July, he allegedly sold heroin to a person who wanted it to commit suicide.
Initial charges were dropped against Carrano for causing a drug-induced death and manslaughter, since the exact cause of Karol’s death came into question, Weatherstone said.
