Thermal image finds hunter who was lost

After so many missing persons stories in which police try every advanced search-and-rescue gadget without success, it’s nice to hear about digital-age technology doing exactly what it’s supposed to – quickly.

A Staten Island hunter who got lost in the woods of Bethel in Sullivan County, N.Y., was tracked Saturday night by a police helicopter using thermal imaging, according to the Times Herald Record.

The search began at 7 p.m., three-and-a-half hours after Dominick Frasca, 43, was supposed to meet up with a friend near Pucky Huddle Road.

Only a couple of hours after that, the thermal imaging revealed Frasca about a half-mile from Pucky Huddle Road, in Lake Superior State Park. Two Sullivan County sheriff’s deputies and a state trooper hiked in and reached Frasca at around 11 p.m.

They found him in “good spirits.” He was wearing clothing appropriate for the 20-degree weather, police told the Times.
