Boy accidentally shoots self with gun

An 11-year-old West Brighton boy shot himself in the finger Thursday with his father’s illegal gun, several news agencies are reporting.

The .38-caliber unregistered revolver accidentally went off while the boy was playing with it. He was alone in the house with his 10-year-old brother at the time, according to the Staten Island Advance.

Police have charged the father – 46-year-old Michael Bilotto – with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child, the Daily News said. Bilotto works at the city Department of Environmental Protection.

The boy shot himself in the left middle finger, which doctors managed to save.
