New Dorp couple charged with leaving baby in car as they shopped

No one knows what this New Dorp couple was getting their 14-month-old for Christmas. But allegedly, it might have been pneumonia.

Nataliyk Pimyuk, 25, and Orest Babchuk, 27, of Marine Way, are charged with child endangerment, after allegedly leaving the toddler locked alone inside a Volvo sedan Saturday while they went shopping, the Staten Island Advance reported.

Police said the child had been sitting alone in the cold car for half an hour before a woman in the parking lot of the Hylan Shopping Plaza noticed him in the backseat and called a child abuse hotline.

The temperature outside was about 40 degrees. The baby weighed about 35 pounds.

The car was opened and the baby removed by the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit. The parents were arrested when they returned to the vehicle.

The child was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, for evaluation, police said.
