Sears at the Mall survives cut – for now

The Sears store on Staten Island is not closing. Yet.

It’s being spared for now, as the company that also owns Kmart, America’s favorite pre-Wal-Mart discount super-store, sheds locations nationwide, the Associated Press reported.

Sears Holding Corp. issued a list of 79 stores Thursday that are slated for termination. Though the location at the Staten Island Mall escaped that list, the company has said it plans to close between 100 and 120 stores altogether – and another list of closings is due in the future.

Low holiday sales doomed the stores – at a time when Christmas revenue turned out relatively strong elsewhere, according to CNN.

Sears Holding said it’s ending a practice of propping up underperforming stores, which they had done in the hopes that they would improve.

The New Springville Kmart was designated to close long before this list came out.
