Killer gets extra prison time, saying ‘I’d do it all over again’

When making a statement before you’re sentenced for murder, you probably shouldn’t conclude that “if I had to do it, I’d do it all over again.”

That remark – well, his whole statement, really – probably got a convicted killer in Staten Island an extra two years on his sentence, according to the State Island Advance.

Jermaine Lewis, 21, had pleaded guilty in July to first-degree manslaughter, and faced 12 to 15 years in prison. Law enforcement sources told the Advance he probably was just going to get 12 or 13 years.

But after his speech in state Supreme Court on Wednesday, he got 15.

Lewis shot 39-year-old Timothy Browning to death on May 17, 2010. They had gotten into a fight during a late night block party in Mariners Harbor, when Lewis was handing out cigarettes but would not give one to Browning. Browning pulled a knife. Lewis retrieved a gun and went after Browning, shooting the much larger man four times.
